10 Halloween Safety Tips for Children and Teens

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many children— imagine all the candy, the costumes, and of course, the exciting memories. While it's a time for fun and imagination, it's also important for parents to prioritize child safety during this festive occasion. Here are some tips to keep your child safe during Halloween.

1. Choose costumes that are easy to move around in

Select costumes that fit your child well and are easy for them to move around in. Don’t go for costumes that are too long, lest they trip, and opt for flame-resistant costumes instead. This will help prevent accidents near objects with open flames, like candles and jack-o’-lanterns.

2. Opt for bright and reflective costumes

Use reflective tape or stickers on costumes to increase visibility, especially if you plan to go trick-or-treating after dark. You can also give your child a flashlight or glow stick to carry for added visibility.

3. Go for safe face makeup instead of masks

Masks can obstruct vision and make it difficult for your child to see oncoming traffic or obstacles. Consider using face makeup or face paint instead.

4. Plan a safe trick-or-treat route

Plan a trick-or-treat route in advance, so your kid knows where to go. Stick to well-lit and familiar neighborhoods, and avoid shortcuts that go through alleys and poorly lit areas.

5. Adult supervision

For younger children, accompany them during trick-or-treating at night. As for the older kids, give them a curfew to return home and ensure they move in groups. Remember to stay vigilant and keep an eye on your child’s whereabouts at all times.

6. Traffic safety

Teach your child to look both ways before crossing streets and to use crosswalks when available. Always hold hands when crossing streets and never assume that drivers will always be able to see you or stop their vehicles on time.

7. Inspect candy

Before indulging in Halloween treats, inspect all candy and treats for any signs of tampering or unusual packaging. Discard any homemade treats unless you trust the source. For kids with allergies, check the labels for allergens and be cautious about what your kid is eating.

8. Home safety

Ensure your home is well-lit and free of tripping hazards for trick-or-treaters who visit your house. Keep pets securely indoors to prevent them from becoming agitated or escaping.
